Summer is here, which for me means camping and foraging. In other words, lots of time in the bush.

With that comes an increases risk of tick bites and spread of Lyme disease. Blacklegged ticks, AKA deer ticks, can be carriers of B. burgdorferi which causes Lyme disease.

Surveillance over the recent years has shown that populations of blacklegged ticks have been spreading in Canada, in part due to climate change and warming winters.

Be proactive and take steps to prevent bites.
1. Covering up. Wear long pants and sleeves, socks, and closed shoes. Fabric should be light and evenly coloured so ticks can be spotted easily.
2. Double-check yourself. Be overly thorough, looking at all areas including your scalp, ankles, armpits, groin, navel and behind your ears and knees.
3. Wash and dry. Shower yourself and wash and dry your clothing after outdoor activities. 60 seconds of high heat in the dryer will kill ticks.
4. If you have pets, check them too.
5. Check risk area maps available prior to exploring the area to help you prepare.
